George P. Betty, retired plasterer

George P. Betty, 83, of Millsboro, and formerly of Wilmington, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013.

Born June 9, 1929, in Wilmington, he was the son of the late George B. and Viola Jester Betty. He was a 1947 graduate of A.I. Du Pont High School. He was a two time past president of the Plasterer’s Union Local 38. He was married to his wife, Eileen, who survives him, in 1974. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge 2173, and twice served as commodore of the Indian River Yacht Club, in 1981 and 1994. He continued to be an honorary member up until his passing. He had a saying, “I’d rather dance than eat!” He was an avid NASCAR fan, and loved to tell jokes.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children: Richard Betty and wife Joanne of Townsend, Deborah Nichols and husband Wayne of Marydel, and Connie Rose and husband Joe of New Castle. He also has two stepchildren: Richard Thieleman of Wilmington and Michael Thieleman, and companion Millie of Anchorage, Alaska; and five grandchildren: Brian Betty, Larry Thompson, Mark Thompson, Michael Rankin and Chrissy Betty. There are five great-grandchildren: Allison Thompson, Kayla Thompson, Faith Thompson, Hope Thompson and Rachel Betty. He is also survived by numerous extended family members and friends, and his beloved feline friend Main, so named because he was “the main cat!”

A funeral service will be held at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, at noon, Monday, Jan. 28. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until noon for viewing and visitation with the family. Pastor Anne Strauss will officiate, and Linda Walls will deliver the eulogy. Interment is private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
