At the January meeting of the Sussex County Firefighters Association the group held its annual Firefighter of the Year Ceremony.
This year’s recipient was John F. Downes of the Gumboro Volunteer Fire Company; Downes is a charter member. He has been extremely active with the fire police at a company, county and state levels.
Downes served as chief engineer for 10 years and has been active with emergency medical services. He has also served his community as a Boy Scout leader and has been an active member of Gumboro United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.
