January 28, 2013

Delaware State Police arrested a Dagsboro man Jan. 27 after a traffic stop revealed he was transporting more than a thousand baggies of heroin, police say.

A trooper in the area of Long Neck Road tried to pull over a blue Chevrolet Malibu at 2:30 p.m. as it turned onto School Lane, said Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.

The car continued westbound on School Lane and abruptly stopped in front of Long Neck Elementary School. A passenger got out and started running across a field with a plastic bag in his hand; the car sped away, Fournier said.

The man threw the bag on the ground and was arrested nearby. Police discovered 1,252 bags of heroin weighing a total of 31.3 grams and assorted drug paraphernalia.

Police arrested Derrell D. Gibbs, 22, and charged him with possession with intent to deliver heroin, possession of heroin, second-degree conspiracy, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $81,600 secured bond.

Police continue to search for the driver of the Malibu.
