As with most grandparents, I would do anything to keep my 11 grandchildren from harm and welcome anything that would help to protect their precious lives. Gov. Jack Markell is proposing legislation that could help us avoid the unimaginable pain suffered by grandparents of the murdered schoolchildren in Newtown. He proposes having mandatory background checks for all gun purchasers, limiting the capacity of gun magazines, banning sales of civilian versions of military automatic weapons and increasing mental health resources for our citizens. I hope all Delaware grandparents, along with our representatives in Dover, will join me to support this common-sense legislation. In my view, those who oppose these measures are not as concerned with supporting Second Amendment rights (or protecting our children) as they are with protecting their bottom lines.
