James Gallons Jr., retired administrator

James E. Gallons Jr., 74, of South Bethany Beach, and formerly of Claymont, died suddenly Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at the Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.

Mr. Gallons was born in Newport, R.I., son of the late Lt. James E. Gallons USN and Beatrice Gallons. He was a graduate of Norwich Free Academy (class of 1956), Bates College (class of 1960) and received his certificate of physical therapy (1962) from University of Pennsylvania. He was employed by Christiana Care for 32 years. He retired as administrative director of physical medicine and rehabilitation. He was proud to be project manager for the establishment of the Center for Rehabilitation at Wilmington Hospital.

He was a past president of the Delaware chapter of APTA; past president, Board of Examiners for Physical Therapy; was a captain in the USAR 2289th Division; and a member of St. Martha’s Episcopal Church in Bethany Beach.

Jim was a lover of sports and enjoyed playing golf. He was an avid reader and a naval history buff. He also enjoyed gardening, fine wine and entertaining; however, his true loves were his wife and family.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nancy; his children, Judith A. Gallons of Bethany Beach, James E. Gallons III and his wife April of Clayton, N.C., Jennie Gallons Ferdinand and her husband Christopher of Clayton, N.C.; and three grandchildren, James E. Gallons IV, Abbey Gallons and Madeline Ferdinand.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 28, at St. Martha’s Episcopal Church, Bethany Beach. Burial will be private.
