Thoughts From the Sidelines

Good riddance, nor'easters!  Daylight saving time is here!

March 7, 2013

This past week showed what the essence of being a no-name professional golfer is. Michael Thompson won this week at the Honda Classic in Palm Beach, Fla. Thompson's good performance came out of the woodwork. Even though he got this year off to a rough start, one good week can change someone's career. The only other time he was in the spotlight was at last year's U.S. Open, where he finished tied for second behind Webb Simpson. The other big story in the world of golf this week is the constantly changing status of the use of the long putter. The USGA wants to ban this club. I support this move for the professionals, but I think amateurs should be allowed to use it. There should be two sets of rules for the use of this type of club. I hope the golf organizations make a decision soon. You would think they were choosing a new pope!

In baseball, the Phillies had a good week for training games, especially Ryan Howard and Dominic Brown. Let's hope their bats stay hot when the games start to count. The Baseball Classic coverage on TV has not lent itself to easy and enjoyable viewing with the 5 a.m. coverage slots. The situation will improve this week when the U.S. starts playing and the games will have more prime-time exposure.

With March Madness on our doorstep, college basketball games are worth watching as many top conferences like the ACC, the Big East, the Big Twelve and others finish up with tournament play. Make sure you try to catch a University of Delaware women's game. Elena DelleDonne has really upped the viewing interest.

Don't forget to change those clocks when you head to bed on Saturday night. We are all so ready for good weather!
