Spring forward means change smoke alarm batteries

While it may not seem like spring, it is right around the corner, and daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m., Sunday, March 10.

The Delaware Volunteer Firefighter’s Association reminds everyone this is the time of year when people should check their smoke alarms and make sure they are working properly. Change the batteries. It only takes a minute of precaution to possibly save a life.

“Evidence shows those who are severely injured or killed in a fire could have, in many instances, been saved by having a working smoke alarm in their home or business,” said Charles Boyer, DVFA president. “If a working smoke alarm isn’t presently installed, there is no excuse for not having one. They are readily available at most home improvement stores for a nominal charge. If you can’t afford one, go to your local fire department, which is likely to have some on hand, or know of where you can get one.”

In the past several years, Delaware volunteer fire departments have given out tens of thousands of free smoke detectors and replacement batteries to people who can’t afford them.
