Spring forward means change smoke alarm batteries

While it may not seem like spring, it is right around the corner, and daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m., Sunday, March 10.

The Delaware Volunteer Fire­fighter’s Association reminds everyone this is the time of year when people should check their smoke alarms and make sure they are working prop­erly. Change the batteries. It only takes a minute of precaution to possibly save a life.

“Evidence shows those who are severely injured or killed in a fire could have, in many instances, been saved by hav­ing a working smoke alarm in their home or business,” said Charles Boyer, DVFA president. “If a working smoke alarm isn’t presently installed, there is no excuse for not having one. They are readily available at most home improvement stores for a nominal charge. If you can’t afford one, go to your local fire department, which is likely to have some on hand, or know of where you can get one.”

In the past several years, Dela­ware volunteer fire departments have given out tens of thousands of free smoke detectors and replacement batteries to people who can’t afford them.

Rehoboth committee to discuss audio

The Rehoboth Beach commu­nications committee will review the city’s current policy for au­dio recordings of city meetings and consider a recommendation extending the time recordings are kept online for certain public bodies.

The committee will continue to discuss the components of a communications plan and will also discuss the concept of send­ing a welcome letter to new property owners.

Lastly, the committee will hold followup discussion on website home page news recommenda­tions, budget and overhaul status for the site; agenda format rec­ommendations; and the status of a proposed program for post­ing support documents for city meetings online.

Rehoboth planners to reschedule tree program

The Rehoboth Beach Plan­ning Commission will discuss alternative plans to conduct its educational program, “Trees vs. Construction: How can they best coexist” at the commis­sion’s regular meeting, 6:30 p.m., Friday, March 8, in the city com­missioners’ room.

The commission will con­tinue to discuss its work plan for carrying out its research and amendments to the city’s tree ordinance, a task that was mandated to them by the city commissioners.

In new business, the commis­sion will conduct a preliminary review of a partitioning appli­cation for property located on Sussex Street at lots 58, 56, 54 and 52. Attorney Chase Brock­stedt is requesting, on behalf of owners Alexander Martin Clark and Eileen Stroud Clark, to di­vide the four lots into two, with portions of lots 56 and 58 becom­ing one 7,027-square-foot lot and portions of lots 56, 54 and 52 becoming another 7,027-square­foot lot.

Finally, the commission will discuss the non-approval of an ordinance requiring site-plan review for any planned construc­tion within 25 feet of the city’s lakes, as well as an upcoming public hearing on a proposed 10-foot, no-build buffer around the city’s lakes.

Dewey noise limits to be discussed

Dewey Beach Quality of Life Committee will meet at 10 a.m., Friday, March 8, at Dewey Beach Life Saving Station on Dag­sworthy Avenue. Dewey Beach Audit Commit­tee will meet at 4 p.m., Friday, March 8, at Dewey Beach Town Hall on Rodney Avenue. The committee will review audit pro­posals for the fiscal year ending Sunday, March 31.

Budget officials to discuss Dewey tax

Dewey gross receipts tax could appear on September ballot

Dewey Beach Town Coun­cil will meet at 6 p.m., Friday, March 8, at Dewey Beach Life Saving Station on Dagsworthy Avenue. Commissioners will hear a presentation from the budget and finance committee to pass an ordinance establishing a gross receipts tax on in-town businesses. The tax would have to be approved at a referendum in September before it could go into effect.

Microbrewery makes proposal in Dewey

Dewey Beach Town Council will meet at 9 a.m., Saturday, March 9, at Dewey Beach Life Saving Station on Dagsworthy Avenue. Council will hold a public hearing on an application from Highway One Partnership to temporarily expand Jimmy’s Grille for a July event.

Dewey council to interview attorneys

Dewey Beach Town Council will meet at 1 p.m., Monday, March 11, at Dewey Beach Life Saving Station on Dagsworthy Avenue. Commissioners will hold a closed-door session to conduct job interviews.
