Tulip Festival to return to Lewes

Trolley tours, photo contest among events
March 8, 2013

The Lewes Chamber of Commerce is teaming with Lewes in Bloom, the Lewes Historical Society, Lewes Parks & Recreation Commission, the Zwaanendael Museum and the Historic Lewes Farmers Market to present the fourth annual Lewes Tulip Festival that will continue through Saturday, April 13.

Event Chair and Deputy Mayor Ted Becker said, “Fulton Bank’s generous sponsorship of this year’s festival enabled us to have the tulips planted by a local landscaping company and will allow us to expand the festival’s marketing initiatives.”

The event will include trolley tours to various tulip planting locations with docents from the Lewes Historical Society pointing out some of Lewes' historic landmarks. The trolley tours are $10, and reservations can be made by calling the Lewes Chamber of Commerce at 302-645-8073. Trolley tours will take place at 11:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m., Thursday, April 11; and at 11:15 a.m., 12:45 and 2:45 p.m, Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13.

The event organizers created free the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map with an associated ticket to encourage festival-goers to explore businesses that participate in the festival. Ticket holders who visit 10 of the 32 businesses advertising on the map and get their ticket stamped will be entered in drawings for 32 gift certificates donated by the businesses. The drawing will be held Monday, April 15, and winners will be notified by phone or email.

A photography contest is another component of the festival with judging in six categories: Lewes Architecture, Lewes Landscapes, Quintessential Lewes (subject matter that is uniquely Lewes), Tulips (images must be photographed in the Lewes geographic area), Lewes Food and Lewes Pets. Deadline for entries is Monday, March 25, and the awards will be presented at 2 p.m., April 13. For entry rules and more information, call the chamber at 302-645-8073 or visit the chamber website below. The photographs will be on display in Zwaanendael Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., April 11 to 13.

The Tulip Festival Quilt Exhibit with floral themes is hosted by Mare’s Bears in the lobby of the Beacon Motel at 514 East Savannah Road. A delft exhibit at the Zwaanendael Museum can be viewed during regular hours of operation, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the museum will host Dutch games in Zwaanendael Park on Saturday. The final schedule of events will be available in early April, and the Tiptoe To The Tulips map and Tulip Tickets will be available at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce Thursday, April 11.
