Murder suspects plead ‘not guilty’

A man and woman have pleaded not guilty to murder charges involving the death of an elderly Greenwood couple.  Michael Emory, 32, and his girlfriend, Christiana Evick, 31, were arraigned, March 8, in Sussex County Superior Court.

Judge T. Henley Graves ordered the couple have no contact.

Emory and Evick had been evicted from a home they rented from Harvey Cashwell, 76, and wife Carolyn Cashwell, 66, six months before the couple was killed, police say.

The Cashwells’ bodies were discovered after neighbors became concerned for their welfare and alerted police.

Emory was arrested in April 2012 and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, four counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, burglary and theft.

Emory had been staying at the Greenwood Inn at the time of his arrest.  Police say they found him after Emory tried to pawn one of Carolyn Cashwell's rings.

Evick was brought to police by a relative Dec. 21, after a warrant was issued for her arrest. She was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree robbery, four counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, burglary and conspiracy.

At the time of her arrest, police say, Evick was on home confinement for stealing guns from a couple she lived with in Harrington to pay for Emory's bail in an unrelated incident.

Evick, of Delaware City, is being held at Delores J. Baylor Women's Correctional Institution without bail.  Emory, of Greenwood, is in Sussex Correctional Institution without bail.
