Thoughts From the Sidelines

March Madness is on our doorstep!

March 14, 2013

I typically try to talk about what's in the works with active seasons, but this week I have to start with football because of what happened this past Monday. Baltimore and San Francisco completed a trade that was very surprising to me; the Ravens traded one of their best players, Anquan Boldin, to the 49ers! They just played in the Super Bowl! Why on earth would you give a top player to one of your biggest rivals? This makes no sense to me. Anyone else sharing my thoughts on this one?

No, I did not forget about the golf story of the week. Tiger Woods, for the second time this year and third at this course, won by two shots at the World Golf Championship at the Dural Resort in Florida. He added a little drama at the last hole when he almost hit it in the water. That probably would have made him go into a playoff with Steve Stricker, who finished second. Kind of sweet revenge for Tiger, winning this year at this event when he had to withdraw last year due to an injury. Nothing big for the men's tour this weekend but it's the first domestic LPGA tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. if you are trying to catch some good golf on TV. Still too cold to be out on local links.

Because the World Baseball Classic had much more coverage this week, I did not get to watch any Phillies' spring training games. The U.S. team got incredibly lucky advancing to next round. Their loss to Italy in the first game put them behind the 8-ball.  In their last game in this first round against Canada, losing by 2 runs with only 2 innings left, they decided to show up just in time and get a win. The whole thing ends on March 19.

And if none of the above sparks your interest for TV watching this weekend, there are tons of college basketball games to be had as teams finish up conference tournaments before March Madness begins on Tuesday, March 19.
