American Legion Post 28 celebrates 30 years and St. Patty’s Day

March 26, 2013

American Legion Post 28 in Oak Orchard celebrated its 30th anniversary March 17. The post also celebrated St. Patrick’s Day. The post was established by a group of local veterans who in 1983 wanted to bring the American Legion to the Millsboro area.

The veterans needed a place where they could gather, reminisce about their service time, coordinate activities, keep in touch and start programs to take care of one another and other veterans who might need some help.

They had a vision and desire to become a part of the American Legion, knowing that the American Legion was all about helping veterans. The group was granted a charter that same year, but they had no meeting place. They purchased a trailer which became the first home of the Oak Orchard/Riverdale post.

That same year the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 28 was awarded a charter. The trailer is gone, but Post 28 is now the fourth largest post in the country.
