No black cars for Rehoboth police

April 10, 2013

While they may have snazzy new green and black uniforms, matching black cars are not in the cards for the Rehoboth Beach Police Department.

In the 2012-13 city budget, $45,000 was budgeted for new police uniforms and $72,000 for two new police cars.

The department planned to phase in new cars matching the black and green colors of the new uniforms, but City Manager Greg Ferrese said he cancelled the order for black and green cars because the city commissioners did not authorize the change.

The department will get two cars, but in the familiar white and blue color scheme. Ferrese said the white vehicles are more representative of Rehoboth's resort image.

Mayor Sam Cooper said he was not opposed to changing the color of the cars, but only after discussion of what the cars would look like and how to transition to a new fleet. Cooper said a fleet of half white and half black cars would raise confusion for the public.
