John "Jack" W. Burroughs III, county surveyor

John "Jack" W. Burroughs passed away peacefully Monday, April 1, 2013, at Seasons Hospice in Christiana Hospital. Jack was the son of John W. Burroughs and Elva Harmon Burroughs and was born June 5, 1942. Jack was a graduate of Brown Technical High School and went into the Army after graduation. He was honorably discharged and worked for the Army Corps of Engineers before starting a long career as a surveyor with New Castle County.

Jack was predeceased by his loving wife of 45 years, Geraldine "Gerry" Whaley Burroughs. Gerry passed away Nov. 18, 2012, after a short illness. Jack and Gerry spent many of their summers on their boat which they kept at the Indian River Inlet. Jack was happiest when he was with Gerry on their boat and with their friends in Ocean View.

Jack is survived by his sister Ann Burroughs Caputo and her husband Tony; brother-in-law Dale and sister-in-law Bernice who lovingly helped Jack after he lost his devoted wife Gerry. He is survived by a cousin, Donna Shea and many nieces and nephews. In the last days of Jack's life, he was compassionately cared for by the nurses, doctors and aides at Seasons Hospice in Christiana Hospital.

Friends may call on Wednesday, April 10, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2230 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Jack may be made to Seasons Hospice at Christiana Hospital, 220 Continental Drive, Ste. 101, Newark, DE 19713.
