Sophie T. Protack, loved chocolate

April 7, 2013

God called one of his angels home to join her heavenly family Thursday, April 4, 2013, when Sophie T. Protack, 99, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her devoted family.

She was born in Wilmington March 29, 1914, to the late Marcella and Konstanty Smolka. Her husband of 54 years, Peter Paul Protack Sr., died in 1993. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Jennie Miller and Francis Lobacewicz and a stepsister, Stella Heal Braum. She is survived by her sons, Peter Paul Protack Jr. (Janet) and Ronald F. Protack (Sonya); granddaughter, Kristin; grandson, Timothy; great-grandchildren, Tim, Louis, Annabelle and Molly; her nieces, Carolyn Streb and Patricia Kellmyer; nephews, John and David Lobacewicz; as well as many great-nieces and -nephews.

She loved all things chocolate and baking things for her family, friends and neighbors on Maple Street where she lived for 33 years. During the past five years she lived with her son, Peter, in Hockessin or Ronald, in Newark. Cooking on Sundays and holidays were some of her favorite times because everyone gathered at her house to share stories and reminisce. She was happiest at the beach, whether it was Rehoboth, Bahamas, Cape Cod or Hilton Head, but especially with her sisters at White Crystal Beach. Sophie had a very caring, loving heart and had a kind word for everyone.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Heartland Hospice for their care and support.

Sophie was a longtime member of St. Elizabeth's Church, 809 S. Broom St., Wilmington, where Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m., Monday, April 8. Family and friends may visit from 10-11:30 a.m. prior to Mass. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, 3300 Market St., Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to St. Elizabeth's Church in Sophie's memory, 809 S. Broom St., Wilmington, DE 19805.
