Diversity and depth power Cape lacrosse girls past Saint Mark's
The key to the success of Cape’s girls' lacrosse team is the diversity and depth of the talent pool. The pond is restocked each fall at Hudson Fields with Atlantic Lacrosse, and in the early summer there are the Eastern Shore Lacrosse Club teams open to high school players from the Delmarva Peninsula including summer kids.
The Cape team - varsity and junior varsity - under the direction of the Zen Master P.J. Kesmodel can throw and catch, and athletes know how to play unselfishly.
On April 10 at Champions Stadium the Vikings took apart the Spartans of Saint Mark’s 21-4, ending the game in spread red, which means, "Don’t shoot; let's work on holding the ball."
The Vikings had nine players contribute at least one assist each, highlighted by Aliie Yeager with 3 and Sarah Tappan 2, both strong girls known as finishers. Cape’s first six goals in the 14-3 first half were scored by six different players.
“We have a lot of players who can score,” Kesmodel said after the game. ‘If we get the ball enough, we’re going to score a lot of goals. Karalyn Joseph has been great on the draw, and Sarah Tappan is getting better with each game. And on defense with Sam [Broadhurst] in goal, our defenders have really come along with Linsday Voss, Taylor Gooch, Maggie Delp and Coryn Cannon. The last three teams have been kept under five goals each.”
Cape was led in scoring by Anna Frederick with 5 and Sara Young 4. Karalyn Joseph, Sarah Tappan , Kat Judge and Lexi Woodruff each had 2, and single goals came from Claire Carnevale, Allie Yeager, Jordan Brown and Lizzie Frederick.
Cape outshot the Spartans 31-12. Sam Broadhurst had 6 saves while Anne White of Saint Mark’s had 5.
Cape will play Wilmington Friends at 6:30 p.m., Friday, April 12, at Wesley College. The Vikings boys will follow, playing Friends at 8 p.m.
In junior varsity action, Cape defeated Saint Mark's 14-1. Sophie Kalb, Peyton Medd, Dahlyn Sugrue, Morgan Catts, Erin Coverdale, Alison Palmer and Rachel Carey all scored 2 goals. Tess Bernheimer had a single goal while Lauren Kelley had 2 assists.
Emma Holland had 4 saves in goal.
