Aviation Museum’s “Runway 5K” Cleared for Take Off - DRBA to Temporarily Close Airport to Support Community Effort
(Lower Township, NJ) On Saturday June 8, 2013, the Cape May Airport will host the Naval Air Station Wildwood (NASW) Aviation Museum’s “Runway 5k & 1 Mile Fun Walk.” The event will take place on the airfield beginning at 9:00 a.m. Proceeds will benefit restoration efforts of historic Hangar #1 which is listed on both the National and State of NJ register of Historic Places. The Runway 5K will be held rain or shine.
“We’re excited to bring this new event to Cape May County,” said Dr. Joseph Salvatore, Director of the NASW Museum. “We appreciate the Authority’s support to make this special event a reality. When was the last time you could say - I ran on a runway!”
“We will temporarily close the airport to air traffic that day to allow runners and walkers this unique opportunity to compete on the runways,” said Tom Berry, airport manager for the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA). “The museum does a great job preserving aviation history and we’re pleased to be able to support them in this endeavor.” The airport will be closed to air traffic at 8:00 a.m. and will re-open at 11:00 a.m.
Early registration is highly recommended. All participants 18 and older registered before June 1, 2013 will be entered to win a FREE RIDE on the B-17 Yankee Lady WWII bomber. The bomber will be at the museum June 10, 11 and 12. Race day registration opens at 7am at the entrance to the Aviation Museum. Air traffic and runways will be shut down between 8am-11am. Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is located in Historic Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport, New Jersey. Cape May Airport was formerly Naval Air Station Wildwood, which served as a World War II dive-bomber training center.
