DBCC to hold Fourth Annual DE-feet Breast Cancer 5K May 19

April 21, 2013

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition will hold its Fourth Annual DE-feet Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk Sunday, May 19, at the Tanger Outlet Center in Rehoboth Beach. Last year’s event had more than 1,200 participants representing eight states. This year’s event will have some new and exciting additions including a post-race celebration. All money raised will benefit DBCC’s programs and services in the local community.

The Fourth Annual DE-feet Breast Cancer Run/Walk will include a chip-timed 5K Run/Walk and a 1-Mile Fun Walk. The 5K Run/Walk will start at 8:30 a.m., and the 1-Mile Fun Walk will follow directly after. The event will be held rain or shine at the Tanger Outlet Center’s Seaside location, 36470 Seaside Outlet Drive, Rehoboth, and will follow a new 5K course that will loop through part of the Junction and Breakwater Trail.

The event will feature pre-event ceremonies including a special Circle of Hope survivor celebration and music. Registration is $20 per person before May 13 and $25 thereafter and on the day of the event. Online registration is open at www.defeetbreastcancerwalk.org. The registration fee includes participation in the 5K Run, 5K Walk or 1-Mile Fun Walk, an event tech T-shirt (guaranteed for preregistered participants only) and admittance to the new post-race party. This run/walk is a family-friendly event open to participants of all ages.

The event will also feature face painting and a Kids Corner. The post-race party will be under a tent with a food court, and wine and beer garden. There are also hotel and campground specials and Tanger coupons available.

“When we initiated the event, we had no idea that this run/walk would bring so much support for the breast cancer cause,” said Vicky Cooke, DBCC executive director. “And this is not just a race in Sussex County. Last year’s event had participants from eight states; there were men, women and children of all ages at this event. It is great to see such a diverse group, and we hope to continue to grow this event each year.”

The event is produced by Races2Run, a race management company with a focus on raising money for nonprofits in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland. At the end of the event, awards will be presented to top finishers in age categories from 9 and under to 70 and older. Team and individual spirit awards will be presented by DBCC for those who have the best theme, raise the most money and more.

DBCC encourages community members, businesses and organizations to sign up for the event and walk or run in honor or memory of someone in their life who has been impacted by breast cancer. Runners and walkers are invited to be creative with team names and attire and are encouraged to wear pink. Runners and walkers can create teams to be eligible for prizes. Teams can fundraise by holding a car wash, collecting change, holding a bake sale and more. For more information about teams, visit www.defeetbreastcancerwalk.org.

Proceeds from the Fourth Annual DE-feet Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk will benefit DBCC’s programs which increase breast cancer awareness, promote the importance of early detection, provide access to mammograms, and provide support and resources to men and women in the local community who are newly diagnosed or facing recurrence of breast cancer.
