The Information Technology Department at Nanticoke Health Services has received several national recognitions as one of the best places to work in Healthcare IT in a community hospital.  Recently, the Information Technology Academy published an article on Nanticoke’s IT department in its IT MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENTAL JOURNAL.

The article notes, “Nanticoke Memorial Hospital—a 99-bed facility in Sussex, Delaware—has earned industry-wide recognition for the positive IT workplace environment it has created. Nanticoke has been fostering a workplace environment that promotes collaboration, accountability, and employee satisfaction.”

Nanticoke’s IT department consists of 17 staff members who are divided into three separate teams: the networking team, the clinical analysts and web development team, and the programmer analyst team.   For Nanticoke, it is critical that staff are empowered enough to be involved in the decision making process. Despite having teams in place with different responsibilities, Nanticoke allows staff members to volunteer to take on projects and tasks. In this way, staff can become more engaged while working with colleagues from other teams. “It’s not just your higher level people involved with all of the projects. For example, we have a technician who has been here for a number of years. We found some untapped skills in him. He put together an interactive television system for us. The entire project was his responsibility and he did a fantastic job,” Godesky says.

Along with creating a comfortable atmosphere for workplace empowerment, the organization expects a high level of productivity from staff. With the amount of initiatives slated to take place at Nanticoke in the coming months, it will be important for the entire IT department to work collaboratively in order to meet organizational expectations.  The organization is currently in its third year of meeting Stage 1 meaningful use measures. Meaningful use measures were put in place by the federal government to help build information networks across health care providers for an end-goal of better communication and better patient care.  Nanticoke is among the top 10% in the nation in meeting meaningful use requirements.

“We are also looking forward to the launch of our new hospital patient portal in July 2013.  This patient portal may provide a user-friendly way for patients to review information electronically about recent tests or procedures including patient education and discharge instructions, or to check upcoming testing or procedures including information about how to prepare for the procedure,” says Anja Ziemba, Manager, Clinical Informatics. “I’ve been working with the IT department on the EMR project for sometime and they are a hard-working group of people.”

“In so many ways, Nanticoke is ahead of the pack when it comes to health information management.  We are proud of all our team has accomplished, said Penny Short, Chief Nursing Officer and COO for Nanticoke Health Services
