Drama at the Masters

As this week continues to leave us wondering if we will ever see some nice golf weather here, last week's Masters lived up to its reputation of pomp and circumstance.  Adam Scott became the first Australian to win the Masters on April 14.  He won on the second hole of a playoff against Angel Cabrera of Argentina. It was a good thing the two finished the playoff after only two holes as darkness was closing in! The event would have lost much of its luster if it had been forced to end on Monday.  I am very happy for Adam Scott himself because he has been a very good player ever since he was 18 years old but had not been able to win a major event.  He blew a chance to win last year's British Open but didn't let that haunt him and was able to come back and win this year's Masters with a clutch performance on Sunday.

There were two other big stories at this tournament. Tiger Woods drew a two-stroke penalty that cost him a good chance of winning the event when he took an illegal drop after his ball hit the flag stick on hole 15 and ricocheted into the water.  I personally feel the officials were to blame for the way the incident was blown out of proportion; I was glad he was not disqualified. The second big story was the amazing performance by the 14-year-old eighth grader from China, Guan Tianlang. I hope he doesn't get burned out from playing too much golf at such a young age.

One side note this week was the not unexpected news that Elena Delle Donne was picked to go to Chicago to play pro. She was the second pick in the WNBA draft, and this news made front page headlines for the News Journal. Congratulations, Elena!
