April 19, 2013

Derek Magee, a junior at Sussex Technical High School, has been involved in competition since the age of 3 when he began his racing career in BMX bicycle racing. He won several races and three state championships before moving up to go-kart racing at age 6 and winning two WKA state championships.

At the age of 10, he moved up to junior modlite stock car racing, where he earned two consecutive track championships. At age 17, he is now in his third year of racing a late-model crate stock car.

His great-grandfather, Russell Avery, died of Alzheimer's disease the year Derek was born. In his honor, Magee is advertising the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s on his race car.

The walk is scheduled for Oct. 12 at Grove Park in Rehoboth Beach and is the only fundraiser held in Sussex County by the Alzheimer’s Association.  Magee races at Delaware International Speedway in Delmar on Saturday nights.

For more information about the walk, call Jamie Magee, Derek’s grandmother, at the Delaware Valley Chapter office in Georgetown at 302-854-9788 or 800- 272-3900.
