Dixie M. Kain, loved dance

April 19, 2013

Dixie M. Kain, daughter of Frank and Gladys (LaForge) of Saginaw, Mich., died of lung cancer in her home in Washington, D.C., Thursday, March 7, 2013. She was the revered mother of Michael Kain (Marlana), Candace Hayes, Kristen Sheehan and Carol Kain. She was the devoted grandmother of Shannon, Molly (Mark), Courtney (Ben), Patrick, Matthew, Brendan and Kylie; and the proud great-grandmother of Alexander. She was predeceased by her high school sweetheart and husband of 53 years, Harry R. Kain in 2001.

Although she attended Marygrove College in Detroit, her passion was dance. Dixie studied dance her entire life, both in Detroit and New York City. She danced professionally at the age of 5. As a young mother, she owned and managed her own dance studio, taught lessons in tap and ballet and choreographed all of the routines for her yearly recitals. Dixie also played the piano. She was an enthusiastic military wife, relocating every few years, and a devoted mother, volunteering in her children's schools and activities. Her greatest legacy was a strong faith in God. Dixie committed her later years to unifying her family and planning holiday celebrations. She loved spending time with family and friends at her beach house in Rehoboth Beach. She will be dearly missed.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 8:45 a.m., Monday, April 22, at the Memorial Chapel at Fort Myer, in Fort Myer, Va. The internment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Capital Caring, Resource Development Department, 2900 Telestar Court Falls Church, VA 22042. Arrangements by Joseph Gawler's Sons, Washington, D.C.
