Art league to feature Catherine Hillis: Color and Light starting May 3

April 26, 2013

The Rehoboth Art League presents the first of the spring/summer exhibition season with Catherine Hillis: Color and Light in the Tubbs Gallery and a Members Showcase: Shadowboxing in the Historic Homestead. The public is invited to an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, May 3.

Catherine Hillis lives in Round Hill, Va., in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Her watercolors seem to reflect the amazing colors and mystic aura of the area. All around her is the scenery she loves: the tumbledown barns, grazing sheep, stone walls, verdant pastures and – her personal mountain.

Hillis loves to play with light patterns in her paintings, often paints with brilliant color, and sometimes approaches her subjects with a playful twist. While she enjoys painting the beautiful rural landscape around her, often “en plein air,” she’s just as interested in capturing the urban scene, with its energy, architecture, crowds of figures and reflections.

The exhibit will remain on view and paintings for sale through June 2. On May 4, Hillis is providing a workshop, Watercolor Bootcamp from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will learn how to pull out all the stops and produce an exciting painting from beginning to end. To register, visit rehobothartleague.org or call at 302-227-8408.

The Members Showcase: Shadow Boxing will continue through June 9. This show will include the use of shadow boxes that enhance an artist’s work as well as the exemplary use of shadows in fine art. A shadowbox is a framed box, usually square or rectangular in shape, with a glass front; it is typically used for displaying and protecting treasured or important items.

The Rehoboth Art League is a membership-based nonprofit arts organization dedicated to teaching, preserving and inspiring the arts in the Region.
