Alice H. Mund, left a mark on all

Alice H. Mund, 84, of Lewes, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 10, 2013, at her residence. She was well cared for by Compassionate Care Hospice of Delmar.

Alice was born June 4, 1928, in New Haven, Conn., daughter of the late Allen Jackson and Kate (Boles) Hill. Mrs. Mund grew up in Dalton, Mass. She graduated from Dalton High School in 1946 where she was voted most sophisticated, best dressed and best athlete. She met her future husband, Henry A. Mund Jr., while working at Eastover Resort, Mass. They moved to Dallas, Texas shortly before they wed. The newly married couple then moved to East Hampton, N.Y., where they raised three children.

Mrs. Mund volunteered many hours to the American Cancer Society, the local Republican party, Guild Hall and the Ladies Village Improvement Society (LVIS), which she joined in 1955. Mrs. Mund presided over “the gate” at the annual fair each year and garnered the most “contributions” ever recorded.

She was also a founding member of Friends of Guild Hall in 1973. She went to work for Mark, Fore & Strike department stores in the 1980s, worked there for 14 years, and was manager before retiring. Mrs. Mund's career path didn't end there; she continued working and became director of the East Hampton COC for several years before her final retirement.

Mrs. Mund’s volunteerism extended past her retirement as she returned to one of her most dedicated passions, the LVIS and chaired the Bargain Box for over seven years. She transformed the Bargain Box into a clean, organized and very profitable thrift store. It became the “hot spot” of East Hampton. Her dedication, energy and retail experience led to new heights in the profits from the store. She was hard-working, “slow but steady,” as she used to say, and always cheerful. Her humor and sage advice endeared her to all the members who worked alongside her.

Mrs. Mund enjoyed gardening, walks on the beach collecting beach glass, being with her friends, and most of all spending time with her grandsons, who were the apples of her eye. She was a lady of the greatest generation, a lady who lived through good times and tumultuous times and personal trials, but always did so with grace, style and good humor. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and great and loyal friend who left her mark on all those with whom she came in contact. Death is harder on those left behind, but remember the good times and the funny times and laugh about those as that would be the advice Alice would give.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mund was preceded in death by her brother, Richard "Dick" Hill. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Henry A. Mund Jr.; her son, Henry A. Mund III and his wife Nancy of Alna, Me.; her two daughters: Kate L. Mund of Amagansett, N.Y., and Lauren L. Mund of Lewes; three grandsons: Daniel Mund and his wife Lindsey, Nathan Mund and Travis Loschen; and her brother, James Hill and his wife Lorraine and their children: Marsha Hopping, Charles Hill, and Peter Hill.

A Graveside Service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 15, at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Cooper Lane, East Hampton, N.Y. A reception will follow at the LVIS, 95 Main St., East Hampton. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes.
