Proposed rent assistance program unwise
As a resident of a mobile home community, I wish to express my thoughts on the proposed assistance program, MHAP, presented by Rep. Ruth Briggs King.
Any assistance program is a wonderful concept if it helps those most in need. However, this program is, in fact, a loan. If a homeowner is in arrears on lot rent and/or mortgage payments, how are they going to be able to repay a loan? This proposed assistance program would help only a small percentage of mobile home residents. It may even hurt those most in need if they find themselves unable to repay a loan.
What we residents of mobile home communities most need is a rent justification act. Rent justification would be fair and equitable to both the residents and the land owners. A rent justification bill would allow homeowners to approximate the amount of increase in lot rent each year and allow them to budget accordingly.
