James Otis Handy, retired educator

James Otis Handy died Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Delaware Hospice Center, Milford, surrounded by his son and sister.

Otis was born Jan. 20, 1920, to the late James and Hattie Jackson Handy in Salisbury, Md. After moving to Delaware, Otis began his teaching career at the former William C. Jason High School teaching history. After the closing of Jason in 1967, Otis took a teaching position at Sussex Central High in Georgetown. After many years in the classroom, Otis ended his teaching career in 1992. Otis was a faithful member or Israel UM Church, its Methodist Men, VFW Post of Millsboro, John H. Porter Chapter-Tuskegee Airmen, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and Delaware Retired Teachers Association.

Otis's wife, Delores Norwood Handy, predeceased him in June of 2011. Survivors include one son, Andrew Lamar Handy of Houston, Texas; one grandchild; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Andrew Lee Handy of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Florence Olivia Harris of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Cora Norwood Selby and Hilda Norwood, both of Belltown; the Handy and Norwood families and a host of cousins and friends.

Service will be at noon, Saturday, April 27. Friends may call at the Israel UM Church, Plantation Road, Lewes, from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 26, and at the  final viewing Saturday morning two hours before the service.

Arrangements are by Miller Funeral and Cremation Services.
