Beacon girls collectively snap to win Jim Blades Invitational

Vikings win 9 of 13 events to set meet record
April 29, 2013

The Beacon girls' track team looks like any collection of middle school kids outside the fence at a meet.  But when they show up to an event, it is all business, and there is glaring evidence that they are confident and coached up.

Beacon’s Annie Judge won the long jump with a leap of 14-feet-4-inches; Jordyn Miller was third in 13-11, and Marcella Sabbagh was fifth with 13-5 to start the meet, winning 19 points in the event.

The high jump was won by Zoe Scott 4-10 with Marcella Sabbagh and Taylor Collier  at 4-4 splitting the second- and third-place points. Beacon snared 24 points in the event. Jordyn Miller captured the discus with a throw of 85-5.  The Vikings had 53 points after three field events with plenty of fire power heading to the track.

The Beacon girls went on to score a meet record 182 points to win the Jim Blades Invitational while the boys' team tied for fourth.

"They told Mackey [Dajarte] before the hurdles that middle school athletes don’t use blocks, and she said, 'Well, I and my teammates do,'” coach Tim Bamforth said. Blocks were produced, and Beacon swept the event with Mackey running 9.0 seconds, Judge 9.4 and Katie Boyer 10.0, grabbing the first three spots and 24 points.

Beacon methodically won 9 of 13 events and filled in with depth underneath.

Scott, a seventh-grader who also plays soccer, won the triple jump in 29-10 with Jody Boyer third in 27-9 and Logan Shuttleworth fourth in 27-9.

Shuttleworth won the 1,600 in  5:40 with Melanie McCloy picking up fifth with a time of 6:08. Shuttleworth also grabbed a second in the 800 meters in 2:41. Naiya Smith set the meet record in the 800, running 2:29.

Sixth-grader Alia Marshall won the 400 in 1:06.

Beacon's spring relay team won both tightly contested races. The 400-meter relay team of  Judge, Katie Frederick, Lerah Boyer and Mackey ran 54.8, while the 800-meter relay of Mackey, Frederick, Scott and Marshall  won in 1:57.6.

The boys' side saw Beacon finish tied for fourth with Smyrna, 55 points behind Chipman at 123, followed by Millsboro with 61 and Georgetown with 57.

Ben Bamforth set a meet record in the 1,600, running 5:04, while Seth DePrince was third in 5:21. Bamforth also took second in the 800 meters in 2:22;  the event was won by P.J. Alexander of Millsboro in 2:19. DePrince jogged to the high jump and easily cleared 5-4 to win that event. Matt Schrock took second in 4-8.

Beacon sixth-grader Curtis Purnell took third in the 200 meters in 26.0 and and sixth in the 100 meters in 12.5.
