Wilmington police arrest Milton man with heroin worth $34,000

Wilmington police arrested a Milton man, 31, after he tried to flee a traffic stop and police discovered about 3,000 bags of heroin.

Police investigating drug dealing in center city observed Michael N. Lopez conduct a drug transaction at 10:35 p.m. April 24 and drive away, said Cpl. Jamaine Crawford of the Wilmington Department of Police.

Police stopped him at the intersection of Lancaster and N. Jackson streets but Lopez backed into the police car and then drove forward striking another police car, Crawford said. Police seized 2,599 bags of heroin valued at $34,306. Lopez also had $874 in cash and one gram of marijuana, Crawford said.

Officers arrested Lopez and charged him with possession of a controlled substance, possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, driving while suspended or revoked, careless driving and failure to signal. He was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in default of $122,000 cash bail.
