Dewey committee to discuss Read flooding
Dewey Beach Infrastructure Committee will meet at 5 p.m., Friday, May 10, at Dewey Beach Life Saving Station on Dagsworthy Avenue. The committee will discuss an interim solution to drainage problems on Read Avenue. For a complete agenda, go to townofdeweybeach.com.
Commissioners to address noise, flooding
Dewey Beach Town Council will meet at 9 a.m., Saturday, May 11, at Dewey Beach Life Saving Station on Dagsworthy Avenue. A public hearing is scheduled to discuss an ordinance that would ban smoking on the beach.
Council is also scheduled to discuss and possibly vote on amendments to the noise ordinance, solutions for flooding on Read Avenue and the purchase and installation of surveillance cameras in public places.

Dewey budget officials discuss gross receipts
Dewey Beach Budget and Finance Committee will meet at 3 p.m., Saturday, May 11, at Dewey Beach Life Saving Station on Dagsworthy Avenue. The committee is scheduled to discuss draft ordinances for a gross receipts tax and a gross receipts license fee. For a complete agenda, go to townofdeweybeach.com.

Civic league seeks volunteers
Dewey Beach Civic League is looking for volunteers for its annual Dewey Beach Beautification Day, Saturday, May 18. Volunteers will be asked to weed and plant flowers.
People who are willing to volunteer should meet at the Dewey Beach Life Saving Station on Dagsworthy Avenue at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, May 18. Sunscreen, hats and gloves are recommended. The event is scheduled to end at 12 p.m., and all volunteers are invited to the Annual Civic League Meeting at the Dewey Lions Club at 4 p.m., at 115 McKinley Ave.
Dewey Civic League holds annual meeting
The Dewey Beach Civic League invites members and property owners to its annual meeting at 4 p.m., Saturday, May 18, at the Dewey Lion’s Club at 115 McKinley Avenue.
Dewey Beach Civic League was formed and chartered by Delaware in 1991. The goal of the league is to improve the quality of life for everyone in Dewey Beach.
The league hosts three main events each year: Beautification Day and its annual meeting, a candidates forum and the annual Christmas tree lighting.
The league also has a weekly breakfast at 8 a.m., Thursdays at Sunrise Restaurant.
The group also hosts a July 4 barbecue for the Dewey Beach Patrol, arranges memorial benches and provides funds for special town and lifeguard projects. The league keeps its members in touch with what is happening in Dewey via newsletters and its newly remodeled website, deweybeachcivicleague.org.
The annual meeting will feature a panel of speakers focused on town issues. After the meeting they will have their first happy hour of the year featuring food and drink from Bethany Blues.
No Sussex County Council meeting May 14
Because of a lack of agenda items, Sussex County Council will not meet Tuesday, May 14.
The next scheduled council meeting is at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, in the county administration building on The Circle in Georgetown.
Sussex council provides grants to nonprofits
Sussex County Council presented the following councilmanic grants during its May 7 meeting: $1,000 to Gumboro Community Center to help with heating costs; $7,500 to Historic Georgetown Association for old firehouse and train station restoration; $800 to Delaware Technical Community College for Kids on Campus scholarships; and $1,000 to Nanticoke Young Life for Team Xtreme programs in Seaford and Laurel school districts. Council provides grants to nonprofit agencies offering services and programs to county residents.
Republican party elects officers
At the April 28 Delaware GOP convention, Nelly Aliste Jordan was elected vice chairman of the Delaware Republican Party. Jordan was challenged by Ruth Briggs King, the legislative representative of the 37th district.
During the convention both candidates delineated their plans to build the party and coalesce the troops. After each county voted, the numbers for all three counties were combined and announced: 158 votes for Jordan and 132 for Briggs King.
Jordan’s Five Point Plan includes • Work to fill all FDC and EDC positions through a totally devoted, full-time presence
• Find qualified candidates for every race, leaving no seat uncontested
• Work with Hispanic citizens to bring them into our party and grow our numbers.
• Structure support for our candidates
• Unify the five regions.
