Three St. Jude the Apostle parishioners were recognized April 18 at the Annual Diocese of Wilmington Catholic Youth Ministry Recognition Dinner.
Donna Smith was recognized with the Volunteer of the Year Award, which goes to an individual who volunteers with and sets a positive example for the youth of the parish. Smith has been volunteering with Religious Education since 2004. She assists in classes, volunteers in the Religious Education office, bakes for events, works at youth car washes and more. Smith also is an assigned adorer for Perpetual Adoration, serves as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and volunteers at St. Thomas More Academy.
Brendan Smith received the St. Timothy National Award, the highest recognition from the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry for a diocese to confer to a junior or senior high school youth who lives as a disciple of Christ, sets a positive example for other youth, witnesses to their faith by exhibiting Catholic morals and integrity, demonstrates gospel values through service to others and exhibits Christian leadership in parish, school and community settings.
Smith is a senior at St. Thomas More Academy, where he is in Key Club and National Honor Society, and serves as captain of the Math League. He is also an STM school ambassador and a student math tutor. He is an altar server and an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, and is involved in Youth Ministry. Smith has represented St. Jude the Apostle on the Diocesan Youth Leadership Team since 2010.
Janet Maher was awarded the Companions on the Journey National Award for Ministry in Girl Scouts. The Companions on the Journey Award is given by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry to an individual who has provided three or more years of outstanding service to youth. Maher is an active volunteer with the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council as a service unit manager, troop leader and volunteer trainer. She is on the Sussex County President's Advisory Committee and Recognitions Task Group for the council.
Over the last six years, Maher has been liaison for St. Jude the Apostle and the Service Unit 30 troops. St. Jude’s currently sponsors a Daisy, Junior and Older Girl troop, as well as the monthly service unit meeting for volunteers. Maher is a mentor for Girl Scouts in the parish working toward their Catholic Girl Scout Awards. She is also on the Youth Ministry Leadership Committee and is a lector.
