Shellfish aquaculture topic of Briggs King Meet & Greet May 23

State Rep. Ruth Briggs King, R-Georgetown, is holding a “Meet & Greet” session with constituents Thursday, May 23, in Long Neck, and among the topics expected to be discussed will be the proposed Shellfish Aquaculture Initiative for Delaware’s Inland Bays. The Meet & Greet session will be held at the Long Neck CHEER Center, in the Shoppes at Long Neck, at 6 p.m.

The Delaware Center for the Inland Bays’ proposal to bring a shellfish aquaculture initiative to the First State is on the meeting agenda.  The anticipated multi-million dollar commercial industry would need legislative approval to move forward and Briggs King encourages residents of the 37th District to attend this informative presentation.

According to Briggs King, “After receiving a good amount of feedback from constituents about the proposed project, as well as some conflicting information about the potential impact on the Inland Bays and the recreational boating and fishing industries, I decided that it was important to make this issue a top agenda item.”

Briggs King also stated, “As part of the feedback I received, I was asked to sign a petition that stated the shellfish aquaculture project would be ‘destroying our recreational waterways.’ That is a serious allegation and one I am hoping to address directly during this meeting. I hope that residents that have similar concerns or just an overall interest in the shellfish aquaculture project will take the time to attend the meeting on May 23. I expect a thoughtful discussion and the presenter for the Center for the Inland Bays is prepared to answer all questions and concerns about the project.”

The meeting is open to the public.
