Tunnell Cancer Center Requests Nominations for the Spirit of Hope Caregiver Award
Every cancer survivor knows that there always is one person who stands out as taking extraordinary step to make a difference in the lives of others. Last year, Beebe Medical Center’s Tunnell Cancer Center created a new award, the Spirit of Hope Award, to recognize Sussex Academy of Arts and Sciences 7th-grader Sarah Hawtof for leading groups of students and adults in making origami cranes to carry messages of hope for cancer survivors. Nearly 800 adults and children made the cranes and wrote messages of hope on each one.
These “Cranes of Hope” decorate the Tunnell Cancer Center lobby, reminding all who see them of the strength and hope that people share with one another as they support cancer survivors in facing the daily challenges and to make the most of their lives.
At a special reception last fall at Tunnell Cancer Center, Sarah was presented with the Award. The Award has become an annual one.
“The Cranes of Hope was a project that engaged our community to inspire cancer survivors.” says Judith Ramirez, EdD, Manager of Psychosocial Services and Outreach at Tunnell Cancer Center. “It celebrated hope and love and reminded us of the gifts life offers, even during difficult times.”
Nominations are now being accepted for this year’s award. Nomination forms are available at the Center, located at 18947 John J. Williams Highway in Rehoboth Beach. Those submitting a nomination are asked to write a few paragraphs about how the nominee demonstrated compassion, commitment, selfless dedication, a positive attitude, and how he or she inspires others. Nominations are due May 31 and the award will be presented in early June.
