Dr. Uday Jani to present 'Spirituality & Health through Integrative Medicine' May 30
Dr. Uday Jani, locally known and respected physician, will kick off the start of the Summer Spirituality Series by presenting "Spirituality & Health Through Integrative Medicine" Thursday, May 30. Weekly presentations will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays through Aug. 29 in the Parish Hall of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at 211 Mulberry St. in Lewes.
Jani, MD, FACP, will discuss how medicine and spirituality have significant impacts on each other and if used in combination can lead to healthier lifestyles. Integrative medicine emphasizes medical care of the whole person, which includes an understanding of a patient's family and environment, as well as the social, cultural and psychological situation. Over the past several years, it has been suggested that spirituality is another important, yet often neglected, factor in the health of patients.
Doctors and scientists once avoided the study of spirituality in connection to medicine, but findings within the past 10 years have made some take a second look. Studies show that religion and faith can help to promote good health and fight disease by offering additional social supports, such as religious outreach groups; improving coping skills through prayer and a philosophy that all things have a purpose; providing religious and spiritual beliefs, an important part of how many people deal with life's joys and hardships.
Jani recently completed his two-year fellowship in integrative health at the University of Arizona under the direction of Dr. Andrew Weil. He received his medical education at Gandhi Medical Collage in Bhopal, India, with his residency at North Shore University Hospital, New York, N.Y. Jani is board certified in internal medicine and has held numerous board positions at Beebe Medical Center. He also lectures widely and has been involved in research clinical trials during the last two decades.
Fellowship and locally owned King's ice cream will follow each summer presentation. All are invited to attend these free sessions.
