Elizabeth 'Betty' Barnes, helped write histories

Elizabeth R. "Betty" Barnes, 97, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at Cadbury at Lewes.  She was born in New Florence, Pa., July 22, 1915, daughter of the late Robert Frances and Ethel Virginia (Morris) Raughley.

She graduated from Penn State with her bachelor's degree and went on to receive her Professional  Certificate in Library Science from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md.  In 1939 she married Lt. Russell Bates Barnes.  At the conclusion of World War II they and their daughter Carol moved to Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y.

Mrs. Barnes enjoyed a long time career at Hofstra University, retiring in 1975 as director of the Catalog Department.  At this time she and her husband relocated to Rehoboth Beach, where she was active in the Village Improvement Association, Rehoboth Art League, Rehoboth Beach Country Club and Beebe Hospital Auxiliary.  Mrs. Barnes was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rehoboth Beach.

She loved traveling, exploring genealogy, studying history and writing.  Mrs. Barnes had been selected by VIA and Beebe Medical Center to study their organizations and assist them in writing the histories for their organizations.

She is survived by her daughter Carol and husband Kenneth Blom of Porter Corners, N.Y.; two granddaughters:  Amy Blom and her companion Christopher Hilton of Rock Hill, S.C. and Rebecca Blom Carle and husband Nathan of New Boston, N.H.; one great-grandson:  Peter J. Carle and one great-granddaughter:  Helen V. Carle both of New Boston; two nieces:  Catherine B. Rosenbaum and husband Nathan of Springfield, Va., and Linda Anderson and husband Terry of Cary, Ill.;  and one nephew:  Robert Scott Raughley of Rehoboth Beach.

All services will be private.  Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church,301 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE  19971.
