Neva Lee West, 81, formerly Neva Lee McCabe of Bethany Beach, passed away Friday, May 31, 2013, at Nanticoke Hospital in Seaford, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born at home at Johnson’s Corner in Selbyville, Feb. 6, 1932, daughter of the late Raymond and Florence McCabe. She grew up on the family farm and began her education in a two room school. Neva later graduated from Selbyville High School, class of 1950. She was a retired Sussex County Council employee and also became a Realtor.
Neva was a member of Mariner’s Bethel Methodist Church. She enjoyed music, reading, travel, art museums, quilt making, surf fishing, was an amateur water color artist and enjoyed decoy carving. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with family and friends.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Alvin E. Hickman, and then married Donald E. West, who died in 2004. She is also preceded in death by two sisters, Christine Hudson and Lorraine Cromer. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy J. Hickman and a son, Brice H. Hickman both of Dagsboro;and three granddaughters, Nicole Murray, Rachel Murray and Melissa Hickman. Also surviving are sisters and brothers, Marguerite Bunting, Raymond (Janet) McCabe Jr., Janice (Oliver) Smith, Robert McCabe and Debbie (Howard) Clendaniel; stepson Donald West Jr.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 4, at the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Road, Ocean View, where friends and family may call after 11 a.m. Interment will be privately held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
