Eduardo Saez, Priscilla Saez die in three-vehicle crash

A 1995 Cape High graduate and well-known Cape custodian and his wife died Wednesday, June 5, in a three-vehicle crash on Route 113 near Lincoln.

Eduardo Miguel Saez, 36, who played football and lacrosse while at Cape, was a passenger in a 2007 Kia Rio driven by his wife, Priscilla Inez Saez, also 36. Eduardo worked as a custodian and Priscilla was a cafeteria worker and a bus driver for the district, said Superintendent Robert Fulton said.

Mariner Principal Fred Best said Priscilla drove a bus for the Academic Challenge students at Mariner; she earned Driver of the Year for her service in the district.

Best said he went to Cape High with Eduardo, better known as Mikey.

"You couldn't ask for a nicer guy," Best said. "To be honest, I don't think I ever heard him say anything negative."

Fulton said principals at Mariner and H.O Brittingham schools were gathering support teams to handle the tragedy. The couple had children at each of the schools, he said. An older daughter, Shanel Dickens, just finished her freshman year at University of Delaware.

"We're trying to deal with the situation and support the families right now," Fulton said.

Police said the car was southbound on Route 113 just north of Haflinger Road near Lincoln, when for unknown reasons, it crossed into the center median and then into the northbound lanes.

The Kia struck a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado head-on, and the impact drove the two vehicles into a third vehicle, a 2010 Chrysler 300, struck on the driver side.

Delaware State Police Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said that after the crash, the pick-up truck remained in the center of the northbound lanes, while the Kia overturned and came to a stop in a cornfield, lying on the driver side.  The Chrysler 300 came to an uncontrolled stop in a cornfield but remained upright.

The Silverado was driven by Carlos Farrera-Diaz, 27, of Millsboro. He and passenger and Erick Oswaldo Torres-Castillo 27, of Delmar, Md., were taken to Milford Memorial Hospital where they were admitted with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.  Passenger Cirio Sanchez-Diaz, 37, of Selbyville was taken to Beebe Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Passenger Juan Jesus Grimaldo-Martinez, 24, of Selbyville was initially taken to Milford Memorial Hospital and later flown to Christiana Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said driving the Chrysler was Bridgeville Rep. David Wilson, 63, who was removed by emergency personnel and taken to Milford Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Both Eduardo Saez and Priscilla Inez Saez, who lived in Milton, died at the scene. William Whaley, Priscilla's older brother, said family members were told by the medical examiner that Priscilla's arteries were 90 percent blocked and she either passed out or had a heart attack.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation into this incident.  Both northbound lanes and the left southbound lane of US113 were closed for approximately three-and-a-half hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.

Services are planned Saturday, June 15, at Eagles Nest Fellowship Church, 26633 Zion Church Road, Milton.
