Torch Run kicks off Special Olympics weekend

June 6, 2013

The 27th annual Torch Run kicked off the Special Olympics Summer Games with a gala sendoff June 5 at the Bandstand in Rehoboth Beach.

A police motorcycle escorted the Flame of Hope. Susan Shea, who runs in memory of her husband, Cpl. Chris Shea, who was killed in a traffic crash in 2004, led a group of runners out of Rehoboth. The flame made its way to Troop 7 for the night and the run resumed early June 6 in three Sussex County locations. The flames will meet in Harrington before continuing up the state to the University of Delaware.

In the 26-year history of Delaware Law Enforcement for Special Olympics, more than $4.3 million has been raised.
