Indian River Life-Saving Station to host Summer Guest Speaker Series
In an effort to provide free evening programs at Delaware Seashore State Park, the Indian River Life-Saving Station will be hosting its first Summer Guest Speaker Series on Thursday evenings, beginning June 20 and running through Aug. 29. With a different speaker and topic each week, the series is designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences. Each presentation will begin at 7 p.m. If weather permits, many of the presentations will take place outside in the courtyard. Participants are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.
The schedule of speakers is as follows:
• June 20 - Kim McKenna from DNREC’s Shoreline and Waterway section will discuss management of Delaware’s dynamic beaches.
• June 27 - Susan Ryan, owner of Good Earth Market, will do a demonstration on organic cooking and discuss native edible plants.
• July 11 - James Torbert, knot tying expert, will do a knot tying demonstration and teach participants how to splice a rope. He will also bring his amazing, traveling rope exhibit – fashioned in an old school bus!
• July 18 - Richard Lamotte, successful author of "Pure Sea Glass," will present strategies for finding and identifying different types of sea glass.
• July 25 - Ed Okonowicz, storyteller and author of more than two dozen books on Delmarva folklore, will present his program, “Haunted Lighthouse Tales and Sea Superstitions”.
• Aug. 1 - Dr. Cindy Byrd, curator and folklorist at the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, will present “An Exploration of Decoy History.”
• Aug. 8 - Doris Hicks, seafood technology specialist with the Delaware Sea Grant, will present “Water to Table,” a demonstration on how to clean and fillet a fish.
• Aug. 15 - The Friends of Fenwick Island Lighthouse will present and discuss the history of the southernmost lighthouse in Delaware.
• Aug. 22 - Suzanne Thurman, founder and director of the Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute, will discuss marine mammal and sea turtle strandings.
• Aug. 29 - William Grayson, author of "Delaware’s Ghost Towers," will speak about Delaware in the early days of World War II, focusing on artillery at Fort Miles and the purpose of the towers that dot our coast.
