Men wear bras to support breast cancer research

Fourth annual Bras for a Cause raises money
June 19, 2013

While Dewey Beach is a major hub for parties and recreation in lower Delaware, on the evening of June 5 the town experienced a different kind of entertainment - the kind where men model women's underwear for the night.

Ivy restaurant on Dagsworthy Street hosted the fourth annual Bras for a Cause fundraiser. Sponsored by AmeriSpec Inspection Services, Fairway Mortgage, Law Office of Bonnie Benson and State Farm Insurance Jeanine O'Donnell and presented by the Sussex County Chapter of the Women's Council of Realtors, the event called for a slew of male models who mingled with the crowd to take pictures, socialize, and collect tips. By the end of the night, each model took to the stage with a dance to auction off their bra.

As the men prepared to show off their costumes, the head auctioneer announced to a great amount of cheering that last year, the event donated just under $20,000 to the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.

With over 400 attendees, two of the 36 bras selling for $2,000, a larger facility and twice as many models, they also hoped to double the amount of the donation for this year's fundraiser.

The final count was not available at presstime, but organizers said they are confident the event is going to become an annual occurrence.
