Pamella Bounds-Seemans to display new works at Back Porch Café

Purple Painter Lady to show starting June 21

Thirty years after first frequenting the Back Porch Café as an aspiring artist, Pamella Bounds-Seemans will exhibit new paintings at the Rehoboth Beach restaurant from Friday, June 21, through Wednesday, July 17.

Bounds-Seemans, born and raised in Milton, is known for her acrylic paintings surrounded by collage borders and hand-painted frames. Her latest series, Summer Solstice, will feature local scenes, flowers and beach images reinterpreted in her one-of-a-kind whimsical style.

“I am calling this collection Summer Solstice, because my paintings are inspired by summer and Delaware beach life,” she said. “I have painted local scenes and summery images, but also my technique is summery with vibrant colors and collages. My paintings also fit well with the creative and imaginative style of food and drink at the Back Porch Café, which has been my go-to summer restaurant since I became an artist.”

Bounds-Seemans moved to Rehoboth Beach to become an artist in 1973. She dyed her hair magenta (not yet a trend) and devoted herself to painting, earning herself the title of "Purple Painter Lady."

This is the sixth time that Bounds-Seemans has displayed her work at the Back Porch. She received an MFA in painting from Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M. She is a Delaware Division of the Arts fellowship recipient and won best artist from Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Va. Her works are owned and displayed around the world, including at the Tideline Gallery in Rehoboth Beach.

Leo Medisch, art curator for the Back Porch Café, selected Bounds-Seemans as part of the restaurant’s summer art series.

“She has a great following of art clientele and they all love her work,” he said. “They like to see her new things and buy her things when she comes to the restaurant. We also like to have her in the restaurant because of her history with us. Back in 1979, my first year, I remember her coming in every day, so it’s nice to keep the connection going. The owners have pieces of her artwork in their homes and the restaurant has some too.”

Back Porch Café is a fine dining restaurant in downtown Rehoboth Beach at 59 Rehoboth Ave. The restaurant, now in its 39th season, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. An Après Surf Menu is served daily from 3 to 5:30 p.m. A Prixe Fixe Menu is available on Thursdays for $35 per person.
