Milford Community Band awards eight students music scholarships

June 15, 2013

The Milford Community Band awarded eight area students with music scholarships that include eight private music lessons at the Milford Music Center. Over the past decade, the MCB has awarded 87 scholarships to Milford’s elementary and middle school students. The lessons are valued at $120.

“It’s a fact that kids who play in school bands do better academically, emotionally and socially,” said Kay Meade, a trombone player in the MCB and member of the selection committee. “Everything we want our kids to be can be learned through music.”

Emily Holstein, a scholarship winner and seventh grader at Milford Middle School, is excited about getting better at playing tuba. “I want to improve and get on the level of other kids in the band, “ she said.

Winners of the 2013 Music Scholarships with members of the Milford Community Band selection committee include in back (l-r) Todd Mentzer, MCB founder Joe Lear, Arnold Leftwich and Kay Meade; middle, Melina Hudson, Emily Holstein and Conor Christie. In front are Cameron Young, Emma Moorman, Sophia Williams, Mya MacFarland and Cole Garlick.
