Triple Crown weekend for striders and gliders
Everyone loves a challenge, and the Seashore Striders will offer three this weekend as we mark the third annual Striders Triple Crown Series consisting of three events, three towns, three days. Runners or walkers that reach the finish line in all three events will qualify for Triple Crown Awards to be presented at the Jungle Jim’s 5K on June 22. There is not a separate Triple Crown application, nor an entry fee to register for the Triple Crown; just register for the individual events as you would normally do and we will track your results. First stop is Georgetown with the 7 p.m. Library 5K Run Friday, June 14. Second stop is Irish Eyes in Milton Saturday, June 15, with an 8 a.m. start, while the final stop is the 23rd annual Fathers Day 5K Run at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, June 16, in Rehoboth Beach. Beacon Track & Field Banquet
The Beacon Middle School Track & Field Banquet was held last Monday evening at Cape Henlopen High School as athletes and parents enjoyed two tables full of desserts, along with watching the talented athletes receive their certificates and awards. Assistant Gilbert Maull introduced Clemson All-American Kai Maull, his talented son and coach of the St. Georges Tech High School team. The Beacon boys ended the season on a high note with a third-place finish at the Cape Invitational, while the girls won both the Jim Blades and Cape Invitational, as well as going 10-0 for their successful undefeated season.
Lerah Boyer and Michael Schrock earned the Most Improved Award, while Robert Marsh and Marcella Sabbagh were awarded the Rising Star Award. The Rookie of the Year Awards went to Alia Marshall and Curtis Purnell, while DeDe Mackey and Dane Palmer were awarded the Coaches' Award. The Most Valuable Runner Awards went to Ben Bamforth and Logan Shuttleworth, both of whom scored nearly 200 points on the season. The school record athletes were highlighted, and awards were presented to them recognizing their accomplishments. To wrap up the evening, a slide show of season photos by Fredman, Dan Cook and Monique Bamforth filled the screen as athletes and parents gathered to watch and reflect. Gallagher moving to the beach
Not the comedian, but the runner…Bernie Gallagher of Fairfax, Va., returns to the starting line with the Striders, this time finishing 50th overall in a chip time of 23:57. Gallagher hopes to relocate to the beach within the next few years and live at the beach full time. His 23:57 is one of the finest performances by any runner over 70 years, averaging 7:45 per mile. “I love the beach, and I love to race with the Striders, so this is a good place for me,” said Bernie.
