Delaware City – Salem Ferry Expands Operating Schedule - Weekend Shuttle Service into City of Salem Available through Labor Day

Salem, NJ- Today, Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) officials announced that the Delaware City-Salem Ferry service has expanded its schedule to operate Wednesday through Sunday through September 2, 2013 from Delaware City and on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays only from Salem.  The Delaware City-Salem Ferry operates between Delaware City, Delaware; Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island, and Barber’s Basin at the Port of Salem.  The passenger ferry service began its public schedule on Saturday, May 4, 2013 on a weekend basis.  

“The Delaware City-Salem Ferry links the tale of two cities rich in many natural and historic treasures and architectural styles with the Civil War Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island.” said Heath Gehrke, Director of Ferry Operations for the Delaware River and Bay Authority. “With key stops on the Underground Railroad in the City of Salem and the architectural heritage of Delaware City’s large historic district, visitors have the opportunity to experience history that comes alive.  And, you get to take a ferry on the scenic Delaware River.”

In a new development, shuttle service will now be offered between downtown Salem and the Delaware City-Salem Ferry docks at Barber’s Basin on weekends.  On Saturday and Sunday, June 15-16, B.R. Williams will operate this service while Mid-Atlantic States Career & Education Center will continue the service thereafter.  The new shuttle service will initially operate on Saturdays and Sundays and may be extended to weekdays should demand increase.  The round trip shuttle fee is $4 per person.  The weekend shuttle service schedule is as follows:

At the arrival of the ferry, there will be an exchange of passengers. Those who are returning to Delaware will board the ferry and those returning to Salem will board the shuttle.   The Mid-Atlantic Shuttle has two dedicated vehicles, one capable of transporting 24 passengers and a 15-passenger shuttle.  General Ferry service is available to and from the City of Salem on weekends only; however, groups may reserve Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays to and from the City of Salem by calling (302) 834-7941.  Biking is permitted in Delaware City and in Salem City but not at Pea Patch Island.
