Rev. Jeffrey Ross to hold workshop on ethical wills June 27 at St. Peter's

June 18, 2013

The Rev. Jeffrey Ross, rector at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, will present a workshop on Ethical Wills at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 27, as part of the parish's weekly Summer Spirituality Series presentations. During the evening, Ross will consider how to construct an ethical will, what to include and what not to include. The ethical wills of several famous people will be examined, and an opportunity for the audience to design their own will be provided.

It takes a lifetime to gain wisdom and understanding about our experience of being human. Too often, the only legacy that most people consider is their financial wealth - but what about the truths and personal philosophy they develop over a lifetime? How does that fit into a last will and testament? What about the feelings, experiences and insights that one has not yet shared because the right moment has not presented itself? What happens if one dies before that time has come?

In many instances in the Bible, those of riper years provide a final blessing for those they love, expressing in a cogent way their wisdom gleaned from a lifetime and the hopes they hold for those who come after them. Many today, particularly in the Jewish faith, continue this tradition today in a similar format commonly called an ethical will. Anyone of any faith can choose to leave such a legacy.

Ross has served as the rector of St. Peter’s Church for the last eight years. He is a graduate of the General Theological Seminary in New York City and holds a master’s degree in pastoral counseling from Neumann University. He is currently a doctor of ministry student at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, Calif.

Each Thursday night through Aug. 29, expert presenters will engage participants in the parish hall of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at 211 Mulberry St., Lewes from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Fellowship and locally owned King's Ice Cream will follow each presentation. These free sessions are designed for reflection and dialogue.

In addition to providing spiritual resources for those seeking greater understanding of their own religion, or learning about others, Seekers uses the net proceeds from its store to help those in need, including the Cape Henlopen Food Basket, Doctors Without Borders, and work in Haiti and Centro Infantil in San Miguel de Allende.
