Over 180,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States each year. Many of these women choose to have a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery following the procedure but are not aware of insurance rights or the surgical options available.
The Federal Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998
Under the WHCRA mastectomy benefits must include coverage for:
* Reconstruction of the breast on which the mastectomy was preformed
* Surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to produce a symmetrical or balanced appearance
* The prostheses (or breast implant)
* Any physical complications at all stages of mastectomy, including lymphedema
*Note that depending on insurance plan there may still be a deductible that the patient will be responsible for.
