Iron Mike DeStasio rolling toward AWBA Nationals in Georgia

ALS doesn't stop Mike from pushing his limits
June 19, 2013

Local hero and medical marvel Iron Mike DeStasio packed up his two five-hole bowling balls and rolled out of Lewes early Wednesday morning, June 18, captaining his power lift van heading to Marietta, Ga., for the 52nd All Wheel Chair National Championship Tournament sponsored by the New Brunswick Zone. The competition bowling for Mike will take place over three days, June 20 through June 22, at Paulding Lanes in the small town of Dallas, Ga. Mike is traveling alone by choice, calling this expedition Custard's Last Strand and himself Raging Sitting Bull.

Mike began having symptoms of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) more than five years ago and is now four years past an official diagnosis. In 2011, bowling in his first AWBA National Tournament in Brockton, Mass., Mike won the “A” Division Championship.

Mike could bowl as many as 15 games over three days. Mike DeStasio is one tough hombre.
