Rehoboth Beach Vol. Fire Co. extricated a woman June 22 after the car she was riding in ran into a parked motor home near Dewey Beach.
Robert L. Rankins, 28, of New Castle was driving a 2001 Honda Civic northbound on Route 1 approaching George Street at 6:20 p.m. when he ran off the roadway, said Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.
He drove about 90 feet and struck the front of a legally parked and unoccupied 2005 Winnebago with the passenger's side of his car. A 27-year-old woman was mechanically extricated from the car, Fournier said.
The woman was taken to Beebe Medical Center and admitted with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries, Fournier said.
Rankins was charged with first-degree vehicular assault, driving under the influence of drugs, driving a vehicle at an unreasonable speed and other traffic related offenses. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $7,104 secured bond.
Northbound Route 1 was closed for about an hour.
