Cape Water Taxi offers eco tours

Tours leave from Fisherman's Wharf at 10 a.m. June 29-July 1
June 27, 2013

Cape Water Taxi will offer Osprey Banding Eco Tours June 29, July 1, July 2, and July 3, leaving at 10 a.m. from Fisherman's Wharf in Lewes.

Participants will travel on the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal to nesting platforms where Captain Steve will place identification tags on osprey fledglings before they begin to fly. This practice does not hurt the birds and is done specifically to gather information about the birds such as migration patterns, life span and behaviors.

Captain Steve will anchor the boat at the edge of the canal, place a ladder on a man-made nest and climb up to take a look at how the hatchlings are doing. If they are old enough, he will bring one down to the ground and inspect it to make sure it is strong and healthy. He will place a band on one of the bird's legs and then gently place it back in it's nest.

Passengers on these tours will have the opportunity to see these magnificent birds up close, will be able to get great photos and take home.

These opportunities are few as the optimal time to band these magnificent birds is when they are 7-8 weeks old, and the time is now.

Make reservations online at www.capewatertaxi.com or call 302-644-7334.
