Eastern Shore AFRAM to hold Car & Cycle Show at 2013 festival

Full slate of events set for Aug. 9 and 10 in Seaford

The Eastern Shore African-American Festival 2013 begins Friday, Aug. 9, at the Seaford Sports Complex on Virginia Avenue in Seaford.  This year's AFRAM Festival them is Ujaama, cooperative economics.

New in 2013 is a Car and Cycle Show Saturday, Aug. 10, on the grounds of the Ross Mansion, next to the festival venue. This is an open competition sponsored by Nanticoke Automotive of Seaford.

Registration will be available at www.easternshoreafram.org and on site the day of competition. A registration fee will apply. Cars and motorcycles will assemble on the Ross Mansion grounds from 8 to 11:45 a.m. Judging will begin promptly at noon. The 2013 Community Recognition Award goes to the Delaware Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers, who through educational and historical programs honor the memory of the African-American soldiers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments (U.S. Army, 1866 to 1944).

Another new addition to the festival is the Mascot Mania Breakfast scheduled for 10 a.m.  Saturday. This event for elementary school-aged children allows them to enjoy a free breakfast with a popular mascot. Breakfast for the children is free of charge. Later in the day, the kids can cheer their favorite mascot during the Field Day race.

House tours of the Gov. William Ross Mansion on Saturday will be conducted by the Seaford Historical Society between the hours of 1 and 3:30 p.m.

This year’s entertainment headliners are Zion Reggae Band at 8 p.m., Aug. 9; gospel saxophonist Tony Smith and His Band, 4 p.m., Aug.10; and Best Kept Soul Band, 6 p.m., Aug. 10.

Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for additional concert seating. Some tent seating is also available. Download the festival schedule at www.easternshoreafram.org/PERFORMERS.php

During the AFRAM Pageant, 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Aug. 9, contestants will be judged on talent, an interview and attire. Contestants must be between the ages of 2 and 4 years for Baby AFRAM, kindergarten to second grade for Junior Miss and Junior Mister AFRAM, and third to fifth grade for Little Miss/Little Mister AFRAM.
