Lewes Historical Society to host Summer Craft Fair July 13

July 5, 2013

July in Lewes means the Summer Craft Fair hosted by The Lewes Historical Society. The Summer Craft Fair will be held Saturday, July 13, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., at the Historical Complex at Second and Shipcarpenter streets in downtown Lewes. Admission will be $5 per person; children under 12 are free. Proceeds from this event will benefit educational and preservation programs at The Lewes Historical Society.

With its wealth of historical sites, museums, unique shops, restaurants and pristine beaches, Lewes is an exciting destination for craft buyers and visitors alike. The Historic Complex consists of numerous historic buildings that are open to the public. These houses and museums, surrounded by shade trees and gardens, provide a beautiful backdrop for the craft fair. More than 4,000 visitors are expected to enjoy the Lewes Summer Craft Fair this year. Ample parking is available for both visitors and exhibitors.

The Lewes Summer Craft Fair is well known for the exceptional quality of the craftspeople, including new and returning artists from across Delmarva and the tri-state area. This year, there will be more than 70 talented artisans exhibiting a variety of media ranging from metalwork to woodworking, and this summer’s featured artist, Wes Stack.

“I am honored to be selected as the featured artist for The Lewes Historical Society’s Summer Craft Fair. Having participated in most of the past craft shows during my career in ceramics, I can attest to the value of having such events in our community. Not only does it afford opportunities for local crafts people to display their work, but also draws other artisan from outside the community,” said Stack.

“In doing so, the show provides opportunities for exchange of ideas and techniques. This process also extends to our patrons in that our interactions with them often provide feedback and new directions for our work. On several occasions, my work has been given new paths through conversations with people who are interested in what I do.”

Stack has been working with clay for the past 12 years. He sees clay as a medium that provides unlimited opportunities for growth and personal expression. Stack explains that acquiring skill in ceramics requires “focus, patience and practice, as well as investing one’s self in the processes of creating.” While Stack’s work includes functional pieces such as ceramic bowls and cups, some of his other work is intended to capture images and impressions from his experiences, while still other pieces are “abstract” creations.

See the work of the fine artisans of Delaware and the Eastern Shore, listen to festive live music by Old & New Bluegrass, and enjoy lunch by Casa Amici. For more information, contact The Lewes Historical Society at 302-645-7670 or go to www.HistoricLewes.org.
