Race for the Ribbon July 20 picks up runners abroad

National Guard unit will participate from Afghanistan

An annual 5K run in Rehoboth Beach has gone international.

This year's Race for the Ribbon will include 30 members of the National Guard currently deployed overseas. Stephanie Shuttleworth, a race organizer who started the road race in 2008 in memory of her mother, said a member of the Delaware Army National Guard deployed to Afghanistan organized a group of 30 who will run a 5K abroad in sync with the Race for the Ribbon.

"I will be sending T-shirts and awards to them overseas," Shuttleworth said. "I think they are going to try to videotape as they run."

The race will be held at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20, on the Boardwalk at Wilmington Avenue with registration beginning at 6:30 a.m. Pre-registration is available until July 18 at www.seashorestriders.com for $20, afterwards the entry cost is $25.

This year's proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society and to the Hitchens family of Georgetown whose son, Greyson, is suffering from inoperable brain cancer, Shuttleworth said.

"I used to donate all of the money raised to the American Cancer Society, but then last year I decided to help a local family in need, too," she said. "Our community has been so generous by supporting the Race for the Ribbon that I thought we should give back."

Last year, Shuttleworth said, the race raised $11,000 and had 339 participants. She said she's hoping to raise $12,000 this year.

The Greene Turtle will host a post-party breakfast buffet with music, awards and a silent auction.

Local businesses have donated gift certificates, apparel, gift baskets and even a granite vanity top for auction after the race. A painting done by Greyson will be a special auction item, she said.

"It is just beautiful," Shuttleworth said.
